Laser skin resurfacing treats skin imperfections and discoloration using a fractional CO2 laser. In Gainesville, FL, Dr. Greg Gaines offers this advanced non-surgical technology to provide customized treatments for each patient, along with detailed guidance for proper recovery. If you choose to combine the procedure with a facelift or blepharoplasty, you can see even more dramatic results.

What Is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Simulation of skin before and after laser skin resurfacingCarbon dioxide (CO2) fractional laser resurfacing penetrates the skin’s surface with pulses of light to remove outer layers of damaged skin. It is a safe, non-invasive, and effective way to diminish age-related blemishes and other skin imperfections. Surgical procedures and previous laser resurfacing methods were more invasive and therefore required lengthier recovery periods. With Dr. Gaines’s laser skin resurfacing method, you can get back to work and your other routines in just one week.

As a standalone treatment, a fractional laser can significantly improve both the appearance and texture of your skin.

What Skin Concerns Can Laser Skin Resurfacing Treat?

Laser skin resurfacing is an effective treatment for the following cosmetic concerns:

  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines around the mouth
  • Stretch marks
  • Facial scars
  • Solar lentigines, also known as sun spots or age spots
  • Actinic keratosis, or scaly lesions resulting from sun damage

The best way to find out if laser skin resurfacing is right for you is to meet with Dr. Gaines for a consultation. Because laser treatments can result in hyperpigmentation, he may recommend alternative treatment options for patients with darker skin tones.

What to Expect During the Procedure

After you meet with Dr. Gaines to determine your candidacy for treatment, he can develop a personalized treatment plan to achieve your goals. While it is possible you may only need one treatment, most patients need at least two to three treatments total to achieve their desired results.

Before beginning your treatment, we will apply a topical numbing cream to the treatment area. Cool air is also continually blown on the treatment area to keep it from overheating. Dr. Gaines will place protective eye wear over your eyes. With the numbing cream and cool air, you should feel little to no discomfort during treatment. Dr. Gaines will carefully move the laser over the targeted treatment areas. A typical laser resurfacing procedure takes less than an hour to complete.

Your skin may feel hot or even sunburned for a few hours after your treatment. This is normal and typically dissipates within a few hours. For two to three days after your resurfacing treatment, your skin may look red or swollen. You can minimize swelling with ice packs and hydrate your skin with a good moisturizer to reduce redness. While you may see some immediate enhancement in your skin’s appearance, it will continue to change and improve over the course of several months as your skin renews itself.
