Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery, also referred to as reduction mammaplasty, is performed to treat women whose breasts are too large or asymmetrical. Breasts that are too large can often cause women to experience various aches and pains in the shoulder, back, and neck area and may also be a source of self-consciousness. Breast reduction surgery often leads to a repositioning of the smaller breast higher on the chest, resulting in a breast lift as an indirect result of the reduction surgery (see before and after gallery). We can determine if you are a good candidate for breast reduction surgery at our Gainesville, Florida practice or if an alternative procedure may be used instead.

During breast reduction surgery, the cosmetic surgeon makes an incision around the areola that then extends down to the bottom of the breast. Dr. Gaines uses a ‘Vertical Breast Reduction’ technique, and most often this ‘lollipop’ or ‘tennis racket’-type scar will be the only one made on the breast (except in the case of very large volume reductions). Through this limited incision excess breast tissue and skin are removed, the size of the areola is reduced, and the nipple, areola, and breast itself are repositioned on the chest. In some instances the repositioning of the nipple may result in a loss of sensation or an inability to breast feed. Further risks, benefits, and concerns about breast reduction surgery can be addressed at our Gainesville, Florida practice during a consultation.

We will be able to provide patients with in-depth post-surgical instructions for breast reduction surgery at our practice. In general, it is recommended that patients keep physical activity to a minimum for several weeks after breast reduction surgery. Any heavy lifting or pushing should be avoided for approximately three to four weeks.

Breast reduction can help women who suffer with back and shoulder pain caused by the weight of large breasts. A breast lift is often incorporated into breast reduction surgery for a comprehensive enhancement. Dr. Gaines

Breast Lift

Breast lift, also referred to as mastopexy, is performed to increase the perkiness and reduce sagging of the breasts. Sagging breasts can be a source of self-consciousness for many women and may be caused by gravity and the natural effects of aging as well as a number of other factors such as pregnancy and nursing. Breast lift surgery is sometimes performed in combination with breast enhancement or breast reduction surgery. We can determine if you are a good candidate for breast lift surgery or a combined breast lift/ breast enhancement or reduction procedure at our practice in Gainesville, Florida. We can also determine if an alternative procedure may be used.

During breast lift surgery, the cosmetic surgeon makes an incision around the areola that then extends down to the bottom of the breast. Working through this incision, the surgeon proceeds to remove excess skin and breast tissue and repositions the nipple and areola. In some cases a breast implant may be placed during the breast lift surgery or alternate surgical incisions and techniques may be used to meet a patient’s unique needs.

We will be able to provide patients with in-depth post-surgical instructions for breast lift surgery at our Gainesville, Florida practice. In general, it is recommended that patients avoid strenuous physical activity, particularly activity that involves lifting or reaching for objects over one’s head, for three to four weeks.

Male Breast Reduction / Gynecomastia Surgery

Male breast reduction surgery is performed to treat gynecomastia, a condition that causes a male’s breasts to become abnormally large. Gynecomastia can be caused by a variety factors, including genetic predispositions or hormonal changes, and can be the source of self-consciousness in many men. We can determine if you are a good candidate for male breast reduction surgery at our practice or if an alternative procedure such as liposuction may be used instead.

During male breast reduction surgery, the cosmetic surgeon may simply use liposuction to remove an excess build up of fat in the chest area. If the patient’s gynecomastia involves excessive amounts of glandular tissue and skin, surgical excision of the excess tissue is required. In such cases, the surgeon will make an incision around the areola or in the underside of the arm. Working through these incisions, excess tissue and fat will be removed. More incisions or a larger incision may be required depending on the extent of the procedure.

We will be able to provide patients with in-depth post-surgical instructions following male breast reduction surgery at our Gainesville, Florida practice. In general, it is recommended that patients refrain from heavy exercise and strenuous activity, particularly activity that may involve possible blows to the chest area, for at least three weeks to four weeks.
