When it comes to effective and aesthetically pleasing cosmetic surgery, there are many different factors that need to be taken into account. Surgery on one part of the body will affect the overall appearance of a patient’s body, so various aesthetic concerns need to be accounted for in addition to the traditional health and wellness concerns. We mention this because at the Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Gainesville, we always keep these issues in mind.
About Breast Augmentation Surgery
The above is especially true when it comes to breast augmentation surgery. Changing the size, shape, and contours of the breasts will have an impact on the rest of your figure. There are also many different ways that the breast enlargement surgery can be performed, which means that incisions can be located in different areas and the breast implants themselves can be placed in different ways.
Types of Breast Implants
In addition to surgical methods, however, one needs to keep in mind that the breast implants themselves may vary based on the needs of each patient. Before you undergo a Gainesville breast augmentation at our office, we’ll discuss all of these matters with you in great detail so that you know what to expect going into surgery and as you recover from surgery.
Let’s take a brief moment right now to look at the different types of breast implants available. We will be able to go over these matters with you in more detail during a consultation, but this should give you a good idea of what to expect.
Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone breast implants are one of the most well known breast implants on the market. They are comprised of a silicone shell that contains a silicone gel. They were removed from use in the United States for some years due to health concerns, but that have since been approved for use in the United States by the FDA.
Generally, silicone breast implants look and feel more like natural breasts. Some breast enhancement surgery patients are concerned about ruptures and leaks of implants, however, which can potentially make removal or replacement of these implants more difficult in the future.
Saline Breast Implants
At one time, saline breast implants were the only breast implants available in the United States. Now they are a great option alongside silicone breast implants to consider. They are comprised of a saline solution housed within a silicone shell.
While saline breast implants do not always look as natural as silicone breast implants (rippling can occur, for example), Gainesville plastic surgeon Dr. Greg Gaines would like to assure you that results are exceptional regardless. In addition, saline breast implants are are easier to remove or replace than silicon breast implants when ruptures occur.
Cohesive Gel Breast Implants
Another option for breast implants are cohesive gel implants, also called gummy bear breast implants. These implants have a strong silicone shell and multiple layers of silicone within, hence preventing leakage of silicone in case the breast implants are ruptured. These have not yet been approved for use in the United States by the FDA, though they may be some day soon (watch this space!).
