Important Considerations for Facelift Patients

cosmetic facelift Through facelift surgery, we are able to provide our patients with a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance for years to come. While there are many treatments that can temporarily minimize the facial imperfections that result from aging, none are as dramatic, long-lasting, or effective as facelift surgery. Our Gainesville facelift surgery removes years’ worth of facial aging, while still providing natural-looking results.

What Is a Facelift?

A facelift (rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure that can improve the appearance of the neck and face. During the facelift surgery, excess fat is removed, muscles are tightened, and the skin is redraped. The facelift surgery takes two to five hours to complete. There are many different facelift surgery techniques. Your individual facial contours and the condition and type of your skin will determine which technique is used during your facelift surgery. Our Gainesville plastic surgeon Greg Gaines will hide any scars that result from facelift surgery. During your comprehensive examination, we will tailor a treatment plan to your unique needs and goals. To learn more about the facelift process, please schedule a consultation today.

Candidates for Facelift Surgery

Some patients are not good candidates for facelift surgery. If you are in poor health or have unrealistic expectations, facelift surgery is not right for you. With that being said, most men and women who desire to have facelift surgery are good candidates. You are a good candidate for facelift surgery if you are in good health, have realistic expectations, and are bothered by any of these facial issues:

  • Facial jowls
  • Facial sagging
  • Deep facial creases (around the nose or below the eyelids)
  • Displaced fat in the face
  • Hanging skin from the chin that gives the appearance of a “double chin”
  • Loss of facial muscle tone

Facelift Surgery and Other Treatments

For our patients in Gainesville, eyelid surgery may be combined with facelift surgery. Facelift surgery may also be used in conjunction with brow lift, rhinoplasty, neck lift, chin augmentation, otoplasty (ear reshaping surgery), and injectable fillers.

Facelift Surgery Recovery

After your facelift surgery, swelling, bruising, tenderness, and numbness in the treatment areas are to be expected. A tube may be placed to drain excess fluid and blood that can collect under the skin. You may have this drain for two or three days. Immediately following your facelift surgery, a dressing may be applied to the face to minimize swelling. You will be given medications for pain and to minimize the risk of infection. During your pre-operative consultation, we will discuss your after-care instructions and prescribe medications to control post-surgical pain and discomfort. Your main goal after surgery is to heal. To ensure proper healing and optimal results, we ask that you diligently follow the after-care instructions. We advise our patients to avoid strenuous activities for at least two weeks after their facelift surgery. It is important that you have someone to drive you home and to take care of you after your facelift surgery.
