If you’ve decided to have a breast augmentation procedure, the next factor to consider is what type of breast implant you would like.
There are two main types of breast implants offered by Gaines Plastic Surgery: Saline and cohesive silicone gel breast implants, also known as gummy bear implants. Saline implants are lightweight and affordable, while silicone is firmer and appears natural.
Discover the differences between silicone and saline breast implants and determine which option is right for you.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline implants are composed of a silicone shell filled with saline or saltwater solution. They provide a round and full appearance to the breasts, which makes them feel firm and natural. However, they are prone to “rippling,” which causes them to be noticeable under the skin.
Many patients appreciate that saline implants require a smaller incision since the shell is placed first and then filled with the solution. This also makes the recovery slightly better for the patient.
Saline implants have a lifespan of about 10 to 20 years. They are also more affordable than silicone implants, and they are under warranty if they should go flat or fail before the 10-year mark. Patients must be at least 18 years old to receive saline implants.
How Do Silicone Implants Differ?
Silicone implants are a silicone shell filled with a silicone gel. This consistency makes it more cohesive, which is how it earned the nickname “gummy bear implant.” Gummy bear implants have a natural look and feel, making them popular. It also provides a balance between keeping their shape and appearing natural.
At Gaines Plastic Surgery, patients can choose from a range of different sizes and shapes as well as the consistency of the gel: “Gummy, gummier, or gummiest.”
The incision is a bit larger with gummy bear implants since it is placed pre-filled, unlike saline implants. Further, patients must be at least 22 to receive silicone implants.
