Could Spring Mean Longer Eyelashes?
Some women naturally have long, dark eyelashes. Don’t you just hate them? For the rest of us, it’s mascara, eyeliner, and maybe even false eyelashes to get the look we want.
But what if there was a way to actually grow your eyelashes longer and thicker? And what if you wouldn’t have to sell your soul to the devil to do it? Now you can with Latisse. Latisse is the first and only FDA-approved prescription treatment for growing longer, fuller, darker eyelashes. Dr. Gaines offers Latisse in his Gainesville practice. Here’s how Latisse works.
How does Latisse grow lashes?
When our patients first hear about Latisse they’re skeptical. It sounds like one of those magic elixirs from the old West where the purveyor eventually was run out of town…or worse. But Latisse actually grows longer, darker, thicker eyelashes. No kidding!
The discovery of Latisse was accidental. Scientists at Allergan were working on an eyedrop to relieve intraocular pressure in the eye for patients with glaucoma. Subjects in the test found that their eyelashes grew during the study, so the company began testing the active ingredient, bimatoprost, specifically for growing eyelashes. It proved effective and the FDA approved it in December 2008. It is believed that the bimatoprost increases the anagen phase (that’s the growth phase) of the eyelashes.
But using Latisse doesn’t fit those who need instant gratification — you need to be diligent. You apply the product nightly on the upper lash, as if it were eyeliner. The bimatoprost in Latisse stimulates the lashes to grow. The treatment works gradually, and your eyelashes will experience real growth over time. You’ll start to see longer lashes after four weeks and they will continue to improve to their peak at 12 to 16 weeks. But you must stay with it — once you start the treatment, the topical solution must be applied continuously each night until you achieve the desired results.
In tests, Latisse was shown to be effective in 78% of the participants at the end of the 16-week test period. Specifically, patients using Latisse experienced a:
- 106% increase in lash thickness/fullness
- 25% increase in lash length
- 18% increase in lash darkness
