What About that Junk Under Your Jawline?

woman smiling There are a few famous double chins out there. Think Alfred Hitchcock or Rodney Dangerfield or Orson Welles.

In reality, almost anyone can have a double chin. Don’t believe it? Do a Google search on “Celebrity Double Chins” and prepare to be surprised!

The clinical term is submental fullness. And in the aesthetic world, double chins haven’t really received that much attention. Sure, a facelift can address them, but short of surgery there hasn’t really been an option. Plus, as we age, saggy skin under the chin is anything but unusual.

But in 2015 double chins acquired a new injectable enemy, Kybella®. Kybella® is the brand name for a prescription injection formulated with deoxycholic acid to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin, colloquially known as a double chin. Dr. Gaines provides Kybella injections in our beautiful offices on 76th Street in Gainesville.

Double chins are common

Double chins aren’t hard to find. In fact, a 2015 survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery found that 67% of people said they’re bothered by a double chin. The survey also found that those people were just as bothered by their double chin as their wrinkles or other signs of aging.

As we age, our skin sags; that’s a simple fact. This is due to a variety of factors: the influence of gravity, simple aging (where decreasing production of collagen means the skin has less underlying support), genetics (some people simply have looser skin below the jawline), and weight gain. All these factors cause our skin to droop. And without the support of muscle or bone below it, the skin under the chin is particularly affected. If you accumulate some fat under your jaw, that creates the telltale sagging of a double chin.

Kybella® to the rescue

Formerly, the only way a person could really deal with a double chin was through facelift surgery. Then Kybella® was developed. It is now the only FDA-approved injectable treatment for adults to improve the appearance and profile of a double chin.

Kybella® works because of deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Kybella® destroys the fat cells. Once those cells are gone, there is no storage mechanism to store and accumulate fat in the area.

Multiple treatments yield the best results

Dr. Gaines customizes your Kybella® treatment. The number of treatments will depend on the amount of fat stored under your chin, along with your desired final profile. Most patients experience visible results in two to four treatments, but up to six treatments may be administered, spaced at least one month apart.

And Kybella® does its magic without any side effects or recovery time. You may have some temporary welling at the injection sites, but that passes quickly. The amount of swelling is usually directly related to the amount of fat the person has in the area.

Because Kybella® destroys the fat cells, results are permanent. However, if you gain weight, submental fat can return.
