What Happens If You Stop BOTOX? Here’s the Truth

Many people love the smooth, refreshed appearance they get from BOTOX. But if you’re thinking about taking a break from injections — or stopping altogether — you might wonder what really happens when the effects wear off. Gaines Plastic Surgery helps patients make informed decisions about their treatments. Below, our aesthetic specialists, led by Dr. Greg Gaines, offer decades of experience guiding you through every stage of your aesthetic journey.

Your Face Won’t “Get Worse” Without BOTOX

One of the most common myths is that stopping BOTOX causes wrinkles to appear worse than they did before. Thankfully, the truth is that BOTOX doesn’t damage or age your face. When you stop getting injections, your facial muscles gradually return to normal movement. That means that wrinkles softened by BOTOX will slowly reappear, but they won’t be deeper or more pronounced than they would be naturally.

In fact, if you’ve had BOTOX for several years, your lines may still be less severe because you’ve spent time not reinforcing those expressions that cause wrinkles in the first place.

How Long Before Lines Reappear?

You will likely start noticing movement return three to four months after your last treatment. Fine lines may reappear gradually, depending on your facial expressions, skin type, and how long you’ve used BOTOX. If you’ve only had a few sessions, changes might show up faster than if you’ve been maintaining results over many years.

Your Skin Returns to Its Baseline

BOTOX temporarily relaxes facial muscles, reducing the appearance of dynamic wrinkles (those caused by repeated expressions). When you stop, those muscles begin to contract again, and your skin follows suit. However, your skin won’t suddenly age. It simply returns to its natural state before treatment.

Keep in mind that as time goes on, natural aging continues regardless of whether you’re using BOTOX. If you stop in your 40s or 50s, your face may look different than it did when you started, but that’s part of the aging process, not a reaction to stopping BOTOX.

Is It Safe to Resume Later?

Yes. If you stop for a while and then decide to restart treatments, there’s no problem. BOTOX does not create a dependency, and there’s no increased risk if you take breaks between sessions. In fact, many people adjust their treatment schedule based on events, finances, or personal preferences.
